Dark Castle by m0ps42 Dark Castle by m0ps42
just had to take this shot - it's just a small castle in Gemen but I thought in combination with the cloudy, dark weather ... it's ... stunning.

Combined image from the following 3 shots:
"Original" shot with standard 0 EV = [link]
Overexposured shot with +2 EV = [link]
Underexposured shot with -2 EV = [link]

I wrote a little journal entry about that picture, hope you'll like it.

location: Jugendburg Gemen (NRW), Germany

Very very striking! I think that if the angle was a little more straight, it would have been amazing.

I usually don't go for HDR, but this is great!! It looks almost like a 3D render. Way to go!!

I agree, it's absolutely stunning. It's superb! What a beautiful shot. I love how you captured the shadows in the water, and dark gothic feel to the image. You're so lucky to have been able to SEE this as well as photograph it. All I get to see is the beautiful picture. You did an absolutely amazing job capturing this image! (I am curious, I keep seeing HDR on photographs and I don't know what it is. What is an HDR?)

Thank you for your lovely comment.
HDR stands for "High Dynamic Range" - normally you add an "i" for image. You take different shots of the same motiv (minimum 3) with different expositions. In german it's called "Belichtungsreihe", don't know the exact english word but a lot of modern cameras can do this automatically with the "AEB" mode (auto exposure bracketing). The result are minimum 3 pictures, the "normal" picture (0 EV) and minimum one underexposured (normally -2 EV, you can also do other steps) to be able to see all the areas which are too flashy in the normal picture. The third picture would be overexposured (+2EV) to be able to lighten up all the dark places, shadows etc.
With an HDR programm you put these 3(+) pictures together to one image and "tonemap" it back to a standard picture like my "dark castle" ;)
Sorry for my crap english but I hope I could explain it a little bit.

No problem :)
I submitted a new deviation - the "original" picture is already linked in the subscription.
It's a really good example to show, that a "normal" shot is not able to catch all the details if there are difficult dark and flashy areas.
If you'd like it, I would also upload the 2 other images (under- and overexposured) just to show you the steps ;)

well we can argue if HDR is photomanipulation or not ;)
I posted the "normal" original picture above.
